Part 1 | Minimum Standards of Construction of Poultry Processing Premises
1.2.4 Vehicle loading and unloading areas, vehicle cleaning
areas and inedible material collection areas must be
paved and drained.
1.2.5 Holding areas for live birds shall be sheltered, paved
and drained and provided with adequate ventilation and
cooling.
1.2.6 The buildings should be well ventilated and lit, kept clean
and free from vermin, dust and other conditions that
would contaminate poultry products.
1.2.7 Necessary water, electricity and drainage facilities,
including disposal of works effluent, storm water and site
drainage, and sewerage disposal should be available at
the site.
1.2.8 All site areas which are not sealed should be maintained
in a clean and tidy condition. Stored material on the site
should be kept in an orderly manner 300mm above the
ground in a well-drained positions or on pallets.
1.2.9 The exterior of the premises should be kept in good repair.
1.3 Expansion
In planning the premises, careful consideration should be given to
the plan to allow space for future expansion.
1.4 Soil Types
Care should be taken during site selection to avoid undesirable soil
types. Soil types subject to large expansion and contraction can
adversely affect construction costs or can cause serious damage to
buildings. Heavy soils subject to water lagging can create drainage
problems and allows pools of stagnant water to form.
1.5 Water
1.5.1 An adequate supply of potable water must be available.
1.5.2 Depending on the source of supply, it may be necessary to
install an in-plant chlorination system or other treatment
systems to ensure potability of water at all times.
